Whether or not we stop buying diamonds from African gold mines, the problem is still the same. Poor working conditions. Supply and demand have an effect on this situation. People have put a price on diamonds, and are willing or want to buy diamonds which is the demand. Supplies are limited, adding to the price and worth of these rare gems. But even if we were to buy diamonds from other sources, African working conditions wont get better. It is my opinion that they will instead become worse. The people that have these jobs have them because they can find nothing else. So if we take away their last hope to support themselves and their families, what are they left with? I think these left over jobs would be worse than these mining jobs that they already have. Technology plays a role in this too. Technology would improve working safety and production of the materials necessary. All things being considered, I am not sure the diamond mines in Africa can be boycotted by quitting to buy their products so as to improve their working conditions.
